And I am back!

Sorry for being gone, if anyone is still reading.  I had to deal with real life but now I am back and fashion hasn’t gotten any better.  Take this dress for example.  Normally leaves are a rather suggestive motif.  Just think of Adam and Eve hiding their shame with fig leaves.  Rachel Pally takes the leaf and puts it all over a muumuu.

Floral denim skirt by Kettle Black, $150.00 at Shopbop.

This is like a DIY from hell: botched jeans mended with an old table cloth. Except this was designed, and professionally made.

Distressed striped jeans by Sass & Bide, $255.00 at shopbop.

Submitted by Sarah.  Remember that Mentos commercial from the 90s where the business man sits on the freshly painted bench, pops Mento, and then rolls on the bench to evenly paint pinstripes over his suit.  Remember thinking, “there is no way those stripes would look so even and clean.”  This is what that suit would actually look like… if it was actually a pair of low rise skinny jeans.

Jumbo hair clips by Adia Kibur, $15.00 for two at Shopbop
Ok, so it’s not so pricey.  But holy crap is that ridiculously large.  I actually put this in my “to be blogged” file some time ago, but they soon sold out.  Meaning people actually bought these.  Meaning you may see someone on the street wearing these.  I guess shopbop decided these were such a popular money maker they restocked them, thus allowing me to post them in all their glory.

Cut out swimsuit by Zimmermann, $219.00 at Shopbop.
If you are to get this bathing suit, I would sincerely hope that you are a fan of Mercedes Benz.  After all, if you wear this swimsuit, you will be walking around with their logo tanned into your skin.

“Aztec” ring by Low Luv x Erin Wasson, $68.00 at Shopbop.

The last time I posted something for its name, I got mixed reactions.  I got a lot of messages from people who enjoyed the name and thought it was funny.  This is a totally different situation.  First of all, I have to say I actually love the ring.  I really like the Egyptian motifs.  Yes, I said Egyptian.  So why is it called an “Aztec” ring?  At first, I thought this may be a mistake on the part of Shopbop, but then I went to the manufacturer’s website which lists it the same.  I don’t know why Wasson decided to call this an Aztec ring.  The cartouche features Egyptian hieroglyphs, which do not resemble Aztec glyphs at all.  It is not as if other pieces in the collection don’t have overtly Egyptian themes.  It is just an odd decision that confuses me as an art and archeology aficionado.  Again, I like the ring, but I like it because I love ancient Egypt.

Miniskirt by Sass and Bide, $190.00 at Shopbop.

This skirt is called “Sunday’s Clown”, taking its title from the Velvet Underground song “All Tomorrow’s Parties”.  The song, which was inspired by the lifestyle of those in Andy Warhol’s Factory, describes a poor girl dressing up for the constant parties, only to return to her life of poverty when the night is over.  After dressing up in other people’s glamorous dresses, she once again becomes “Sunday’s clown,” in her rags.  This skirt costs nearly 200 dollars.  While it is raggedy, it is quite far from the image the song presents of the girl.  Maybe they did it on purpose as an elaborate prank on the consumer, calling them posers.  Perhaps they didn’t actually look at the meaning of the lyrics and thought it sounded cool.  Any reason, it is still a 200 dollar shredded skirt named for a song about a poor girl.

Split shoulder dress by M Missoni, $595.00 at Shopbop.

Submission by Sarah.  Sarah said, “just seems like the designer had a bunch of left over scraps of fabric and decided to throw them all together in a dress. We are in a recession after all.”  I have noticed this trend lately.  It’s a “throw it against the wall and see what sticks” philosophy to design.  A little bit of Balenciaga’s wrapped prints, a dash of Preen’s cutouts, and a hint of color blocking equals one messy dress.

Duct tape dress by Cheap Monday, $60.00 at Shopbop.

This dress was submitted by Sarah.  She says the dress reminds her of, ” those bodysuits that actors have to wear when shooting a scene that needs CGI added to it, or possibly a hobo.”

Both excellent observations, in my opinion.
